Google is rumored to keep a laboratory in which there is some future technology. Stored in the secret lab, among others, the space elevator, a car without a driver, teleconferencing with robots, to robots that can run freely. That's all there in the secret lab Google: Google X.
Although most of these ideas are still in the conceptual stage, two-person steering the project said, one product will be released at the end of the year. But unfortunately not delivered what was to be released later.
"They've (reach) is very far from now," says the founder of Heartland Robotics, which is also professor emeritus of MIT in the Laboratory of Artificial Intelligence and Computer Science, Rodney Brooks.
For most companies in Silicon Valley, innovation means developing an online application or supplement their income from advertising. But Google sees it differently. Although already a big company, this laboratory describing Google's ambition to become a place of creation and development of breakthrough new research, after the tradition of Xerox PARC.As is known, Xerox PARC (Palo Alto Research Center) is a development laboratory owned by Xerox, to develop a modern PC in the 1970s. Apple founder Steve Jobs also referred to steal some ideas he got while visiting Xerox PARC. Steve Jobs acknowledged the inspiration gained from Xerox PARC, in a biography written by Walter Isaacson.
Google spokeswoman, Jill Hazelbaker, declined to comment about the lab. Jill said that the project only speculative (future technology speculation) is an important part of the Google DNA. "When all the possibilities become very interesting, please keep in mind that the amount involved is very small when compared with existing investments in our core business," said Jill.
Google founders, Sergey Brin and Larry Page, said to develop these ideas while still working in the Google X, and before before becoming Chief Executive in April. "I spend my time on the project further, we soon graduated to become a key business in the future," she said recently, without mentioning Google X specifically.
The project is developed, how to connect objects from a distance with the help of technology. Like a car without a driver or teleconferencing robot.
One of the engineers who are familiar with the Google X said this project is run under mysterious like the CIA. With two offices, one room for logistics, one for the robot, at a secret location, Google really save the meeting information on this lab.
Reportedly, the laboratory is led by Sebastian Thrun, one of the experts of the world of robotics and artificial intelligence, who teaches computer science at Stanford University.Thrun also said to have created the first car without a driver in the world. K
Later in the Google X, there is also Andrew Ng, a Stanford University professor who specializes in applying neuroscience to artificial intelligence to teach robots and machines to operate as one. Also Johnny Chung Lee, a specialist in human-computer interaction.
What is the reason Google's secret of this? Larry Page revealed little answer: "There are some speculative projects are done, but we were very careful in controlling the money to shareholders," said Page told analysts in July. "We would not bet on this," he continued. | New York Times
